Blessing For The Home On Epiphany (+Video)

Let’s start a tradition of “Chalking Our Doors” on Epiphany. Just as the Magi sought and found a King, we too proclaim Jesus as our Savior and we invite him into our homes and our lives.

Who:  All families of Saint Peter and beyond!

What: Blessing of the Home and Household on Epiphany

When:  Worship on Epiphany, Wednesday, January 6 at 7:00 p.m.

Where:  At home, and still together!

Why:  It’s the 12th Day of Christmas when Jesus was revealed to The 3 Kings!

How:  Do you have chalk?  Then you’re all set. Bless your home and those with whom you live by following the next five steps.

5 Easy Steps

1. Gather at the doorway of your home. Invite grandma and grandpa (or others) by Zoom if you like!

2. Say these words:
Blessed are you, Lord God of all creation.
Bless us as we use this chalk to mark our doors in your honor.
May our homes be dwelling places of faith, goodness, self-control, mutual respect for one another, and obedience to your word.
We ask this through Christ our Lord.  Amen.

3. Make the following sign on your door in chalk: 20+C+M+B+21

4. Take a moment to understand the meaning of these numbers and letters:

  • Numbers at the beginning and end represent the year (2021)

  • Letters have double meanings:  C=Caspar, M=Melchior, and B=Balthasaar, the 3 Kings. AND the letters represent the Latin words Christus Mansionem Benedicat, which means “Christ, Bless this Home.”

5. Finish with this prayer: May all who come to our home this year rejoice to find Christ living among us, and may we find Jesus in everyone we meet, for he is Lord forever and ever.  Amen.

BONUS STEP: Watch the video below. :-)

Let’s Get Started!

Grab your chalk, and let’s do this!  If you do not have chalk, or simply would enjoy a kit, we have put chalk and information in the bin outside the entrance door to the Fellowship Hall at Saint Peter.  Swing by and pick up a small baggie with all the supplies you need. Please consider taking extra to give to those who might not otherwise be able to participate in this.
