Find Us Saint Peter Lutheran Church is located in Greenwood Village, on the south side of Belleview Avenue, one mile east of Interstate 25 (about ten miles south of downtown Denver). We invite you to come join us some Sunday.
SUNDAY WORSHIP This Sunday in the Christian Church Calendar is called The Sixteenth Sunday after Pentecost. The prophet Jeremiah speaks of the incurable wound of his suffering, yet finds in God's words the delight of his heart. When Peter doesn't grasp Jesus' words about suffering, Jesus tells the disciples they will find their lives in losing them. Such sacrificial love is described by Paul when he urges us to associate with the lowly and not repay evil with evil. In worship we gather as a community that we might offer ourselves for the sake of our suffering world.
THIS SUNDAY’S READINGS Jeremiah 15:15-21 Psalm 26:1-8 Romans 12:9–21 Saint Matthew 16:21–28
THIS SUNDAY’S PRAYER OF THE DAY O God, we thank you for your Son, who chose the path of suffering for the sake of the world. Humble us by his example, point us to the path of obedience, and give us strength to follow your commands, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen.
Devotions for the Journey
Saint Peter's Discipleship Team has put together a small devotional booklet to support you in your faith journey as you vacation this summer. The booklet includes services of morning and evening prayer, and devotional messages for reflection. You can use them on the beach, around the campfire or even in the car. Pick up your copy in the Narthex after worship, in the church office during the week, or click here to download a copy.
As you use this devotional booklet, we encourage you to take a picture of you or your family (with this booklet) in front of views that may be familiar to the rest of us. Check here to see pictures that have been submitted so far.
We also encourage you to bring back a small cross or crucifix that represents places where you are traveling. The StPLC Design Team plans to expand the "cross wall" in the Fellowship Hall and they would love to include your cross in that collection.
Travel safely, and may God bless you along the way.
Bishop's Message on Evangelism
"Proclaim the message; be persistent whether the time is favorable or unfavorable ... do the work of an evangelist ... " (2 Timothy 4:2a, 5b)
Dear sisters and brothers in Christ, "Bishop Hanson, what is your number one priority for the ELCA?" The question was addressed to me recently with great clarity and a desire for specificity. My answer? That we be an evangelizing church. The questioner nodded with what I took to be a gesture of agreement and walked away. I am curious how my questioner would have responded to his own question. And I am interested in your response. I wish we could have had further conversation, because the question is both important and urgent. The urgency was brought home again this week by the Chicago Tribune headline that read, "Many in U.S. leave their churches."
The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) selected Denver for a pilot campaign to strengthen the identity of the Church. Ads featuring everyday items fashioned into a cross conveyed in a graphic way that the ELCA shares God's boundless love with the world. That is most evident as our faith intersects with real life. Ads were featured on billboards, bus shelters, bus sides, newspapers and websites. The full series of ads and their stories can be viewed at www.elca.org/love We hope that this advertising campaign was useful in providing conversation starters -- opportunities to share with friends and aquaintances what your faith (and your participation in a Lutheran church) means to you.
