Do You Think People Are Possessed By Demons Nowadays?

As part of our "Ask Pastor Dave" blog post series, a parishioner wrote in to ask...

"Do you think people are possessed by demons nowadays? Jesus was sure busy getting rid of them when he was living on this earth. The only people who seem to be getting rid of them now are people, I think, are extremely phony and looking for money."

Pastor’s response:

I do, but I have a broader understanding of what is demonic than many: lust for power or wealth, addiction to sex, misuse of drugs and alcohol, idolatrous dedication to work, inattention to the poor and needy, inability to participate in forgiveness... I think all of these are evidence that we are touched by demonic influences. As I read scripture, it seems to me that “demonic” is used to describe a power beyond human control that opposes God’s will. It has the ability to capture our attention in a way that leaves no room for God, and the only way out is to be freed from it by the power of God.

I've not seen the kind of demonic signs that Jesus fought (crippling diseases, insane behavior…). It may be that the devil works differently in our day (has developed some new and seductive tools to oppose God) than was the case in Jesus’ day.
