Selian Hospital is nestled in the hills above Arusha, in the Northeastern part of Tanzania. The hospital primarily serves the Arusha region, but with its excellent reputation, frequently attracts patients from as far away as Dar Es Salaam on the Eastern coast.
Selian Hospital was established in the 1950’s by Lutheran missionaries and has grown from a dispensary with a single building and ten beds into a 120-bed, full service hospital. The Hospital provides life-saving services that are desperately needed in this area of the world, including treatment of malaria, tuberculosis, pneumonia and AIDS. Selian also offers in-patient and outpatient services, pediatrics, general and specialty surgery, obstetrics, maternal and child health, hospice and orphan care.
Many children in the community Selian serves are crippled and have no access to corrective surgery or rehabilitative care. Some are born with congenital deformities and many more become crippled through drinking water with a high fluoride content. The excess fluoride found in the regions ground water can soften the developing bones and the children’s legs can become so deformed that they are unable to walk, suffer severe pain and are unable to contribute to the needs of the family and the community. At Selian, Skeletal Fluorosis is among the top 5 causes of crippling in children. In some nearby villages as many as 20% of the children are affected. The most severe cases of skeletal fluorosis are referred to Selian for corrective surgery. Selian surgeons, together with Orthopedic Surgery volunteers, operate on approximately 200 of these children annually. Children come into the hospital unable to walk and then walk out under their own power.
Other rehabilitative surgeries include the repair of burn scar contractures (causing joint immobility), cleft palate repair and club foot reconstruction. There is often a sense of humiliation and depression related to these impairments, but once the surgery is performed, the improvement in physical abilities and self-esteem is life-altering, not only for the patient but for the patient’s family and the entire village.
